I began to study seriously the art, science and philosophy of Iyengar yoga in 1995. I found it to relieve my chronic shoulder condition that I had from running with poor posture. I was most surprised by the condition of peace it brought to my mind. I was hooked the first class and in a short time went to my first Iyengar National convention with Geeta Iyengar. I was such a raw beginner. When I returned my teacher, mentor and now dear friend, Margaret Carr asked me to teach at her studio. Oh how I look back and pity those poor first students of mine! But with diligence and persistence I improved. I’ve attended 3 National Conventions with Geeta and was able to attend the Light on Life conference in Estes Park with Guruji. I also saw him in NYC in an intimate setting as I was a member of the region at that time.
It was Laurie Blakeney who was my first senior teacher. She came to Lawrence and KC at the time for workshops. I remember being so inspired by her and looked at Light on Yoga as though it was another language and wondered how I would ever understand it all. I related very much to her. When Margaret asked me to teach, I signed up for the weeklong teacher trainings through The Feathered Pipe Foundation. Mary Dunn was the teacher and became a mentor and after that week I traveled many weekends to NYC to study under her and soak up her goodness. I took more weeks at the ranch with her and was able to study with her in Mexico. How blessed I was to be touched by her kindness and wisdom before she passed too suddenly and soon after an aggressive cancer.
Margaret then told me about these weekend teacher trainings that 2 senior teachers were doing in Dallas and she and I traveled to many together, and also to their 10 day intensives in San Diego. The teachers are Mary Obendorfer and Eddy Marks. Ironically, Mary O’s first teacher was Mary Dunn. I connected with her immediately and what a bonus to have Eddy, too. They agreed to “take me on” and mentor me and several years later I have finally arrived at being a certified Iyengar teacher, and much gratitude for this to Margaret, my true mentor and to Mary and Eddy who never gave up on me even when I was ready to give up on myself!
Two years ago I had the privilege to study one month with the Iyengars in Pune, India. Before I left I was given permission to return to study in 2 years. That time has come and once again, by the grace of God, I head to India for 2 months of study this time!
